In 1971, a small group of modelers gathered together in the Belmont Shore City Library with the intent to form the country's first N-scale model railroad club. Today the club is one of the country's premiere layouts. We are located in Angels Gate Park in San Pedro, CA.

Built in an old Army barracks, the layout occupies the second story resulting in a pike that measures 25 by 90 feet. The track plan is ten scale miles of double track from the city of Belmont to Bakersfield, plus a single track line to San Jaoquin. Past San Jaoquin, a branch line is under construction to Carbondale where it will interchange with a narrow gauge railroad. A unique feature of this track plan is a train will never pass through a scene more than once, except of course on the loop. This gives the appearance that a train is actually going somewhere, not just running around in circles.

The Belmont Shore club is also where the ideas of N-Trak were hammered out. Please go to our website to learn the History behind N-Trak.

Meetings: We are open every Tuesday from 5:30 PM until 10:00 PM.

Call for directions and upcoming show/events. The layout is HO scale with a dual guage branch line for those of the narrow-minded persuasion. The layout is a "folded dog bone" or point to point with a turning loop at each end and is located in the turn of the century South Pacific Coast Agnew Station. The main line is approximately 300' and the scenery is 90% complete. This club layout has been on several convention tours and also on the cover of RMC and MR multiple times. There are several NMRA Master Modelers in the ranks and even some past NMRA officers and it shows in the layout.

After almost 29 years, the Vallejo Model Railroad Club has had to leave its location in the Civic Building at the Vallejo Fairgrounds. We have located a new home across the Carquinez Bridge in Crockett, CA, less than 10 miles south on Interstate 80, of our old location. The historic building that we have moved into is the old "Independent Order of Odd Fellows" (IOOF) Lodge building at 645 Loring St. We are on the second floor. We meet every Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM until about 10:00 PM. If you call when we are not there, an answering machine will take your message. The layout will be in the main lodge room which is an unobstructed 36 X 60 feet, which will give us more actual room for our new layout than we had at the fairgrounds. We have the whole second floor, which has several more rooms that we can use for workspace and storage space. As of July 1, 2005, we completed the move from Vallejo to Crockett. We are currently in the process of developing a new track plan. We have saved most of the structures and scenery from the old layout for possible reuse in Crockett. If anyone is interested in getting in on the ground floor of a new model railroad, we would sure like to have you as a new member. We are always looking for new modelers that would like to learn the model railroading hobby, as well as those that are experienced in model railroading. We are going to be building a brand new HO scale layout, based on the Southern Pacific RR from Oakland to Truckee, CA in the Sierra Mountains. It will be a two level "mushroom" style layout, with separate staging on a lower, 3rd level. (When contacting by E-mail, put "Carquinez MRS" in the Subject line)

Meetings: Planning meetings to discuss and decide issues pertaining to designing and building the new layout are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month until further notice.

Inside the Museum, you will find three large model railroads, constructed and operated by the East Bay Model Engineers Society (EBMES). Our 71 year-old club, incorporated May 4, 1933, is 2 years older than the NMRA! The models are open for public exhibit from the first weekend in April to the end of December, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 12 noon to 5pm. On Sundays, we run trains on the layouts. With 10,000 square feet of the scale exhibit space, we are the largest club to include three scales west of the Mississippi river. Modelers of all skills are always welcome.

The Gold Coast Modular Railroad Club (GCMRC) was founded in 1987 and is a non-profit "mutual benefit" corporation - 501(c)7 IRS status. The club was based out of a garage until late 1993, when we were able to set up in a large vacant store, rent free, in a Camarillo, California strip mall. The club lost its lease and moved out in December of 1996, just after our last open house. From 1993 to 1996 the GCMRC became recognized as one of the largest model railroads in California, at 4500 sq. ft. with 700 feet of main line track. The Club was featured in a professionally produced VHS Hi-Fi stereo video titled "The Gold Coast Modular Railroad" (ABV 9601). We have constructed an HO scale layout that models many aspects of southern California raliroads. We have an exhibit at the Ventura County Fair in August that is 12 ft x 36 ft,

The Highland Park Society of Model Railroad Engineers, Inc. (the club) currently operates a large H.O. scale layout of a fictional railroad known as the Highland Pacific. The club is supported by some 30 members. Founded in April 1948, the club is one of the older and better-known model railroad clubs in the Los Angeles area. The club has been featured on KTLA Morning News with Gayle Anderson and has appeared in major model railroading magazines. The principal goal of the Society is the construction of a fun-to-operate model railroad which included a variety of operational possibilities for all members, and complete with eye-catching scenery.

We model the late steam-early diesel era but are not slaves to any particular time period. The layout is primarily rural in appearance with scenery coordinated from one module to another so there are no abrupt changes from country to city. We are unique in that our corner modules connect to adjoining straight modules with curved track at the joints - unusual, but it works. The OMRR welcomes inquirers and new members. Come and run your own equipment on the SWRR! For more information call George Pettygrove at (209) 522-3357. My address is 1524 Paulette Avenue, Modesto, CA 95355.

Meetings: We have working sessions each Friday evening from 7-9 and run about one Saturday a month. Each year on the first Saturday of November we hold a swap meet and train show at the Oakdale Community Center.

The original group was started by local Southern California model railroad manufacturers in the early 1970s, as a way to display their products at hobby shows. Organized as the Southern California Module Builders, the club met at the Campbell Scale Models factory. They displayed their first operating modular layout in 1973. At various times in the club's history it was known by several different names, including The Orange County HO Modular Group and Module Railroaders - Orange County Division. In 1997, we streamlined the name to simply Orange County Module Railroaders. In 2005, A separate corporation, Orange County Module Railroaders, Inc. was formed as a nonprofit, non-stock mutual benefit corporation and the assets of the original club transferred to the corporation. We continue taking the hobby to the public, setting up displays at shopping malls, model railroad shows, including NMRA conventions all around the southland, fulfilling our mission to demonstrate the hobby to the public.

The La Mesa Model Railroad Club has created a scale model of the steel artery that carries most north-south rail traffic to California. The club has modeled this line, which passes over the Tehachapi Range of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with astonishing accuracy. Leaving Bakersfield, trains roll southeast along California’s Central Valley to the Caliente Creek narrow where the steep and winding climb begins. The panoramic scale replica of the foothills surrounding Caliente has been described as “one of the most spectacular scenes in model railroading” by the hobby‘s leading magazine. When the exhibit is complete, visitors will follow the railroad up through the mountains, past the famous “Tehachapi Loop” where the railroad crosses over itself in a great helix to the summit near the mountain town of Tehachapi.

The San Diego Society of N Scale (SDSoNS) is a volunteer organization with about 30 active members who spend their Friday evenings enjoying scale model railroading. The layout occupies an 85 by 16 foot area in the basement of the Casa del Prado building. The roadname for the layout is Pacific Desert Lines, road colors: maroon and grey. Pacific Desert Lines is one of the largest N-Scale layouts in the world. The PDL operates from San Diego, CA to El Centro, CA. with connections to the ATSF in San Diego and the SP in El Centro. The route modeled is the original 1855 route surveyed and planned for the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad. Our modeled route stays inside the US, but was not the final route chosen (the present route that was finally built goes through Baja California, Mexico). Portions of the route we are modeling are the same as those of the present route, such as the area through Carriso Gorge. Currently the Pacific Desert Lines has 1,137 square feet of actual layout area (excluding aisles, etc.). The mainline trackage totals 33 scale miles (1,089 actual feet), and includes a ten scale mile loop for operations as well as a point to point arrangement. The point to point distance is about 12 scale miles. There is an additional 2.1 scale miles (70 actual feet) of hidden track for staging. The layout also includes a branch line with a length of 1.55 scale miles (51 actual feet). The narrow gage line has a run of 2.7 scale miles (89 actual feet). Turnouts are no. 6 minimum, with no. 8 minimum on the mainline and passenger sidings. Crossovers are no. 10. Some special curved turnouts are also used, and reach no. 18 in size. All exposed trackwork (including narrow gage) is code 40 rails on wood and pc (printed circuit board) ties. Rails are soldered directly to the pc ties. Every fifth tie is a pc tie. Turnouts are built in place on specially placed pc ties. Membership in SDSONS is open to anyone interested in model railroading. Many club members are expert modelers whose award winning works have appeared in national magazines.

There was an article on the layout in the May 96 issue of RailModel Journal. The HOn3 layout is based on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and the Rio Grande Southern. On the HOn3 layout we tend to model specific prototype scenes. The Sn3 layout is more freelanced. We tend to model scenes as we see fit. The Southern California Traction Club was founded in 1995 by six avid trolley enthusiasts of which four are still members. The club is a modular HO scale trolley modeling group which emphasis on the Pacific Electric. The club has appeared at 41 different shows in California and Nevada, mostly at Great American Train shows. The club did appear at the National Train show in 2000 in San Jose. The club has two trailers equipped for hauling modules and stores them in a converted garage in Baldwin Hills. This location also serves as a clubhouse. Working sessions are held on the second and fourth Sundays at noon and during the week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, depending upon the availability and desire of members. All equipment must operate from overhead wire using trolley poles. Two-rail vehicles can not operate at all and pantograph equipped vehicles can not operate in al places on the layout as the overhead wire is not compatible with pantographs at this time. Diablo Valley Lines is housed in its own building and covers 1,800 square feet. The layout includes over 4,100 feet of track, 400 working switches, 10 mainline cabs, three operating yards (including hump yard), passenger yard, industrial district, traction, and street railway. The layout has numerous animated features. The era is big steam to present. Long (15 car) passenger trains are common. Narrow gauge models California Sierra foothills. Layout involves 900 scale feet of relief and numerous bridges. Under normal operating conditions, it takes a train 45 minutes to traverse the entire layout. Twenty-five members are required to operate all positions. The Club has openings for new members, particularly individuals with scenery and modeling experience. Visit the club on any Friday night after 7 PM for additional information.

Meetings: Work/operating sessions on Tuesday and Friday nights. Public Shows: Third Sunday (1-5 PM) and last Friday (8-10 PM) of each month.

The West Bay Lines is unique in that three scales combine to operate on one large layout (see article in January 1964 Model Railroader magazine for more info). The club dates from 1946, and the layout in the present building since about 1950. The club has a workshop and meeting room in addition to the layout. Current work by the membership involves upgrading scenery and trackwork in all three scales, as we prepare to celebrate 50 years of operation in 2000! The layout is operational, and we are open to the public on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 7 to 10 pm, free of charge. The West Bay Lines are located in the former railroad freight building just south of the Menlo Park CalTrain station (ex-Southern Pacific), alongside the San Francisco Peninsula mainline. Cross streets are Ravenswood Avenue and Santa Cruz Avenue, one block east of El Camino Real. Memberships are open for experienced model railroaders in all three scales. We're 100% NMRA and PCR!

Meetings: Wednesdays 7 to 10 pm. Business meetings start at 8 pm on the 2nd Wednesday, and open house begins at 7 pm on the 4th Wednesday each month (free)
