Interesting Flat Car Loads

Rich Mahaney

This 45 to 60 minute presentation looks at a variety of "stuff" that is transported on flat cars by railroads. It answers the question, "do they really transport that "stuff" on flat cars for real"? It will give the modeler some ideas for their own flat car loads to build.

Rich Mahaney has been involved with model railroads and trains since he was about 5 years old when that first "Christmas train set" arrived. The railroad and trains interest was further instilled and reinforced in Rich by his grandfather that would take Rich down to the train tracks in the Grand Rapids area to watch trains with him, and it has never left. Rich has been interested in modeling the Great Northern in an HO layout and the railroads that interchange with it, between the state Washington and the Midwest as the GN moves perishables in the late 1950's.

Rich has been a member of the NMRA for a number of years and severed as the "Superintendent" of the Eastern Iowa Division (Cedar Rapids, IA area) during 2007 and 2008. Rich was recently elected to the position of "Director at Large" Position for the NMRA North Central Region that serves MI and parts of IN and OH. Rich is probably most known for his model railroad and railroad related clinics and photography that he has used in presentations in a number of states. Rich enjoys all aspects of model railroading, railroads and touring other model railroader's layouts of this great hobby. Rich lives in Gobles, MI which is on the west side of MI between Kalamazoo and South Haven.
